ASU-commit QB Michael Tollefson to join Mountain Pointe football

Quarterback Michael Tollefson, who has committed to Arizona State, has moved to Phoenix and will join Mountain Pointe’s football team this week, coach Eric Lauer confirmed Monday with The Arizona Republic.

Tollefson isn’t expected to officially be enrolled at Mountain Pointe until Tuesday, Lauer said, because Monday is a holiday.

Tollefson, a 6-foot-1, 195 lbs. senior, was recently ruled ineligible to play at Tustin High in California this season, prompting the move to the Phoenix area to be near ASU.

He enrolled at Tustin in late March after leaving JSerra Catholic, where he played in seven games last season. But last week, the California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section listed his transfer eligibility status as denied and said he wouldn’t be eligible until March 27, 2025.

By then, Tollefson should be entrenched in ASU’s football program. He will enroll early at ASU, where he will compete in spring practices for the Sun Devils in 2025.

Lauer said that Tollefson has to go through a 10-day heat acclimatization period that is required by the Arizona Interscholastic Association for out-of-state transfers before he is eligible to play for the Pride. He won’t play on Friday when the Pride travels to California to take on 2-0 Cathedral Catholic. His first game with the Pride would be Sept. 13 at Queen Creek Casteel.

Mountain Pointe won its season opener last Thursday, 45-6, over Surprise Valley Vista. Senior quarterback Robert Knorr threw for 270 yards in the first half. Lauer said Knorr is the most improved player on his team.

But Mountain Pointe has never had a player as highly sought after as Tollefson, who has 22 Division I scholarship offers, including Boston College, Cincinnati, Georgia and Florida State. Tollefson, a dual threat, has a four-star ranking by Rivals.com, where he is rated the 50th-best overall prospect in California in the 2025 class.

In seven games at JSerra last season, he passed for 812 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 380 yards and eight TDs. He spent the first two years of his high school football career at San Juan Hills in San Juan Capistrano, Calif.
