Baltimore man with multiple prior arrests detained after attempt to steal plane

BALTIMORE (WBFF) — A pilot at Martin State Airport in Maryland got to the plane he was scheduled to fly only to find someone was already sitting in the captain’s seat Friday afternoon.

Pilot T.J. Turbin told WBFF TV the man told him he was there for a contract flight. But the plane already had a crew.

“I have never seen this in my whole career in aviation,” Turbin said. “I have never seen anything like that.”

The suspect, 43-year-old Joseph Goldman, is no stranger to run-ins with law enforcement.

WBFF previously reported on Goldman’s 2016 arrest, where he was charged with first- and second-degree rape, second-, third- and fourth-degree sex offense, first- and second-degree assault, perverted practice and related charges.

Officers at the time also recovered suspected marijuana, two handguns, one shotgun with an altered barrel, one rifle and a homemade silencer.

Goldman was later federally charged for possessing the weapons.

In this week’s incident, Maryland State Police responded to the airport and provided a statement:

“According to a preliminary investigation, the suspect, identified as Joseph Goldman, illegally drove past security onto airport grounds. The suspect then left his vehicle and entered an empty aircraft. MSP Criminal Enforcement Division responded and a K-9 unit conducted a vehicle scan. There were no injuries.”

WBFF also learned that the plane Goldman attempted to steal is owned by David Smith, chairman of WBFF’s parent company Sinclair Broadcast Group.
