New restaurants, boutique, barbershop and more – San Diego Union-Tribune

August was a busy month in La Jolla’s business community, with several enterprises opening their doors.

Here’s a look at the restaurants, shops and more that opened recently, along with other news.

Comedor Nishi

La Jolla has Mexican and Japanese restaurants, but with the opening of Comedor Nishi, now it has both in one place.

Comedor Nishi, at 1109 Wall St., is a new concept from Shōwa Hospitality and features Mexican-inspired breakfast and lunch options with nods to Japan and Europe. It opened in mid-August.

“Comedor” in Spanish refers to a dining hall or diner and “nishi” is a Japanese word that means west, as in the West Coast.

“We always admired the way Japanese food is simple and elegant, [so this is] a small nod to that,” said Julian Hakim, chief executive of Shōwa Hospitality. “We bring traditional Mexican dishes you would find at a comedor and add a minor Japanese flair to it without losing the simplicity of the dining hall.”

Shōwa also manages The Taco Stand and Himitsu and had been searching for a small breakfast and lunch concept, Hakim said.

“As a restaurant owner/operator with both Mexican and Japanese restaurants, I always found the two cuisines have a seamless harmony between them,” he said. “They both beautifully exhibit their ingredients. Japanese food is all about the ingredients and letting the ingredients speak for themselves. Mexican food is about flavors and its depths.”

Chef Pancho Ibáñez’s breakfast menu includes chilaquiles, huevos rancheros, tostadas and tortas. The lunch menu includes carnitas, miso-mole and ribeye mojo.

Zentrl Kitchen + Bar

The restaurant at The Lot in La Jolla has undergone a name and menu change, re-emerging Aug. 14 as Zentrl Kitchen + Bar.

Zentrl, at 7611 Fay Ave., serves breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as sushi and a shareable-plates bar menu.

Specialties from the different menus include blueberry buttermilk pancakes, crème brûlée French toast, ahi poke tacos, a citrus lime salmon bowl, flatbreads, chicken schnitzel, pasta dishes and desserts.

Tropical Punch

Joining two other local businesses owned by Zoe and Eric Kleinbub is Tropical Punch, a boutique that opened Aug. 23 at 365 Bird Rock Ave.

The store showcases the Tropical Punch label, a collection of handmade items designed by the Kleinbubs. The collection ranges from Mongolian cashmere blankets and crochet bags to linen shirts and silk pajamas,  and Tropical Punch’s beauty line features essential oils blended to promote well-being.

In addition to the private Tropical Punch label, the boutique offers a curated selection of jewelry, woven objects, ceramics, tableware, sculptures and more.

“Opening Tropical Punch is a dream come true,” Zoe Kleinbub said. “We’ve spent years working with artists from around the world to curate this treasure trove of special items, and behind each piece we’ve selected is a story that resonated with us. We hope those stories and items inspire our customers to create their own unique narratives within their homes and lives.”

Tropical Punch is set within the William Kesling-designed former “Piano Building,” which was built in 1949 and was transformed by the Kleinbubs with the help of B&R Architects and New York City-based interior design firm Georgis & Mirgorodsky. The building also is home to the Kleinbubs’ Paradisaea restaurant and Dodo Bird Donuts.

Maverick’s Barbershop

Maverick’s Barbershop opened Aug. 8 at 7616 Herschel Ave. in La Jolla’s Village, joining Maverick’s Pacific Beach location and planned North Park shop.

Maverick’s, founded by Shannon Canu, “integrates a classic barbershop feel with modern amenities,” according to the company. Services include a barber cut with a neck cleanup, skin fades, beard trimming, straight razor shaves, head shaves and discounted haircuts for children younger than 10 and for senior citizens.

“I’m former Navy, and on the base, it’s a quick haircut with no frills and you are on your way,” Canu said. “In the civilian world, it would take a long time and cost a lot of money. So I think Maverick’s is reaching that midline range for those searching for barber services. With barber services, you are there more often than a salon, so we wanted to provide something that wouldn’t break the bank but provide consistency and an inclusive community. And our barbers are experienced in all these services.”

Village Veterinary Hospital under new ownership

Looking to bring a more “personal and mindful” approach to pet care, veterinarian Julianna Wilcox recently purchased The Village Veterinary Hospital of La Jolla at 7527 Draper Ave.

“I’ve always loved La Jolla and have come here for years … and there’s always dogs everywhere, but not that many clinics,” she said. “I’ve never owned a practice, so I thought a smaller clinic that focuses on a personalized touch would work. I wanted to stay small and local.”

Wilcox, a veterinarian since 2013, said she “practices more progressive medicine” and plans to bring such services to La Jolla, including pet acupuncture and ozone therapy.

“I try to put myself into the owner’s shoes,” she said. “I treat their pets how I would want mine to be treated, and I instill that in my staff. We use fear-free practices. We want it to be the least traumatic to the pets as possible.”

By the end of the year, Wilcox said, she plans to move the practice to a larger space on Pearl Street and provide extended hours and urgent care.

The Lodge at Torrey Pines launches new spa services

The Spa, at 11480 N. Torrey Pines Road, incorporates botanical and marine-based products, including the Coastal Stone Massage, Aromatherapy Massage and CBD Therapeutic Massage; new body exfoliating treatments such as the Coastal Citrus Scrub and Seaside Glow; new body wraps like the Detoxifying Marine Wrap; and new skin therapies such as the Diamond Brightening Facial and SkinCeuticals Skin Renewal Facial.

New at Westfield UTC

Three new enterprises opened in August at the Westfield UTC shopping center along La Jolla Village Drive, with another announcing an October debut.

Among the newly opened stores are Pop Mart, a character-based entertainment company and toy designer that sells collectible toys and figurines that capitalize on trending brands. It also sells toys tucked inside “blind boxes,” in which the contents are a surprise until after the box is purchased and opened.

Some of Pop Mart’s best-known characters are Molly, The Monsters, Dimoo and Skullpanda, each created by one of its artist friends and regular collaborators.

Also open is BYLT Premium Basics, which provides apparel, footwear and accessories “for the go-getter, the pioneer and the ambitious,” according to the company.

The store sells clothes for men, women and children. For adults, the looks range from professional wear to athleisure. The kids’ clothes include interchangeable shirts in black, gray and white over black pants.

Faherty, an apparel brand the company says is inspired by all-day surf sessions, road trips and bonfires on the beach, also is open at UTC.

Uniqlo, a Japanese retailer founded in 1984 and known for selling perennial classics such as polo shirts and, more recently, trendy seasonal items, announced that it will open at the mall Oct. 18.

“We’re so excited to finally bring Uniqlo to San Diego with the opening of our Westfield UTC store,” Nicolas Cessot, head of marketing for Uniqlo North America, said in a statement. “Southern California has been so supportive to us as a brand, we’re eager to expand our offerings in the region as well as join the vibrant local community.”

The store will go in the space vacated by Forever 21.
