Rewinding Alabama’s season opening 63-0 victory over Western Kentucky

The Kalen DeBoer era is finally here. Alabama football is set to face off with Western Kentucky on Saturday to open the 2024 season, DeBoer’s first game as the Crimson Tide’s head coach since he replaced the retired Nick Saban in January.

Western Kentucky makes the trip to Tuscaloosa out of Conference USA. The Hilltoppers will be led by starting quarterback TJ Finley, who has previously faced off with the Tide while playing for Auburn and LSU earlier in his career.

Kickoff is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. CT at Bryant-Denny Stadium. The game will be aired on ESPN.

4th quarter

15:00

— WKU continues the drive on its own 26.

— Hilltoppers can’t move the ball and will line up to punt.

14:02

— Alabama begins the drive on its own 21.

— Ty Simpson throws a pick that would have ended the drive but WKU is called for roughing the passer, with targeting.

— Simpson scores on a 15-yard run. Alabama now up 63-0 with 10:04 left.

–Western Kentucky begins their next drive at their own 26-yard line.

–WKU punts and Alabama takes over at their own 32.

–Two-minute timeout, Alabama still leads WKU 63-0.

–Alabama kneels it out, Crimson Tide win 63-0.

3rd quarter

15:00

— Alabama receives the opening kickoff. Tide starts on its own 25 after a touchback.

— UA goes three-and-out and will punt.

— WKU begins on its own 17.

— Another three-and-out for the Hilltoppers, who will punt.

— Alabama takes over on its own 39.

— Drive ends with another Alabama touchdown. Jalen Milroe takes it 21 yards on the ground for the score, which makes it 49-0 Alabama with 6:30 left in the third.

— WKU begins on its own 20.

— Hilltoppers punt.

— Ty Simpson in at QB for Alabama.

— Tide takes over on its own 47.

— Daniel Hill scores a two-yard rushing touchdown. Crimson Tide now up 56-0 after the extra point, with 2:51 left in the third.

— WKU starts on its own 25 after a touchback.

— Another three-and-out. WKU will punt.

— Alabama starts on its own 25.

— That drive goes nowhere and the Tide punts the ball away.

2nd quarter

— WKU has the ball on the Alabama 13.

— Hilltoppers can’t go anywhere and will attempt a field goal from 38 yards.

— Kick is no good.

— Jam Miller adds another touchdown for the Crimson Tide. That one was a 39-yard rush that put UA up 28-0 after the extra point, with 12:35 left in the half.

12:35

— Touchback on the kickoff. WKU begins on its own 25.

— Hilltoppers face fourth-and-one, convert on a TJ Finley run.

— Later on in the drive, WKU attempts a fourth-and-two in Alabama territory. Hilltoppers convert again.

— Hilltoppers get down to the Alabama 8. WKU takes a timeout, facing fourth down, with five yards to go.

— Finley runs for it and comes up short.

— Alabama starts on its own 5.

— Justice Haynes scores on an 85-yard touchdown rush. After the extra point, Alabama goes up 35-0 with 2:53 left in the half.

— Another touchdown pass from Milroe to Ryan Williams. This one, a 55-yarder, puts Alabama up 42-0 with 1:30 left in the half.

— Conor Talty’s kickoff flies into the end zone and WKU will begin on its own 25.

— Hilltoppers run the clock out and take the game into halftime.

1st quarter

— Touchback on the opening kickoff. WKU takes over on the Alabama 25-yard line.

— WKU’s headset communications aren’t working, so Alabama removes its as well.

— Que Robinson rocks WKU quarterback TJ Finley for a third-down sack. Hilltoppers punt, Alabama will start on its own 31.

— Elijah Pritchett gets the start at left tackle. Proctor is on the sideline in a sling.

— Alabama goes three-and-out. Tide will punt. WKU will begin on its own 20.

11:20

— WKU begins on its own 20-yard line.

— Keon Sabb picks off Finley.

10:48

— Alabama starts out on the WKU 16.

— Jalen Milroe runs 12 yards for the first Alabama touchdown of the DeBoer era. Tide leads 7-0 with 10:07 left after the extra point.

— WKU starts on its own 25 after a touchback.

— Aided by a pass interference penalty, the Hilltoppers move deep into UA territory.

— Sabb picks off Finley once again, taking the interception return deep into WKU’s territory.

— Alabama starts on the Hilltopper 26.

— Jalen Milroe hits Kendrick Law for a 22-yard passing touchdown. Alabama goes up 14-0 after the extra point with 5:01 left in the quarter.

— WKU starts on its own 25.

— Hilltoppers go three-and-out.

— Alabama begins on its own 19.

— Milroe goes deep and finds freshman WR Ryan Williams for an 84-yard touchdown. Alabama leads 21-0 with 2:27 left in the quarter after the extra point.

— WKU starts on its own 25.

— Another quick drive. WKU punts.

— Alabama takes over on its own 28.

— Tide fumbles it away on a bad snap. WKU recovers.

— WKU takes over on the Alabama 20.
