Alabama football’s offense looked brilliant on Saturday against Western Kentucky. The Crimson Tide ran up 600 yards of total offense against the Conference USA Hilltoppers.
Jalen Milroe only threw nine passes, but completed seven of of them for 200 yards and three touchdowns, adding two scores and 79 yards on the ground. Still, Kalen DeBoer said his first game as Alabama’s head coach wasn’t perfect.
“A penalty here, penalty there,” DeBoer said. “We had a communication (error). I think we didn’t snap the ball. I think maybe Parker (Brailsford) was trying to signal something and get the line locked in. And that’s just a quarterback-center kind of being on the same page. And then all of a sudden it was time to snap the ball when Jalen claps, so just things like that that we can continue to get better at.
If there was one valid criticism of the UA offensive attack Saturday, it’s that the Tide didn’t sustain drives. There wasn’t much need to, as Milroe and company rained down explosive plays on the Hilltoppers, but DeBoer acknowledged the issue moving forward.
Western Kentucky possessed the ball for 29:25, while the Crimson Tide held on to it for 30:35. The Hilltoppers only managed 145 total yards, despise holding possession for nearly as long as UA.
“When we had the opportunity to make plays, I’m never going to be disappointed that we’re finding ways to have explosives,” DeBoer said. “That’s a big part of what our offense is about. We preach it, we practice it. And that was fun to see. I didn’t really realize it until I looked at the time of possession, maybe into the first half there a little bit.
“Our defense, you know, you saw the one drive, especially there on the field quite a while, that just kind of added to it. But I’m never going to argue, though, when we have those big plays, those those touchdowns that we had.”
Alabama continues its season Saturday, when South Florida visits Bryant-Denny Stadium.
