Middle Tennessee State football and first-year coach Derek Mason will open the season against longtime rival Tennessee Tech Saturday (6 p.m., ESPN+).
The two teams have played just once since MTSU became an FBS program in 1999, but were archrivals during the days when both were in the Ohio Valley Conference. The winner of the game took possession of Harvey, a totem pole symbolizing the rivalry, from 1960-98.
MTSU is coming off a 4-8 season in 2023 and Tennessee Tech went 4-7. Both teams changed coaching staffs, with Mason and Tennessee Tech’s Bobby Wilder being hired in December.
