Johnny Gaudreau, 2014 Hobey Baker Award winner and 2012 national champ, and his brother Matthew, both Boston College alums, were struck and killed Thursday night by a driver while biking in New Jersey.
The driver, who remained at the scene, is suspected of driving under the influence and is being held at Salem State Correctional Facility, charged with two counts of death by auto, according to New Jersey State Police.
Known as “Johnny Hockey,” Gaudreau dazzled his way through three season with the Eagles. He came out of the gate with 21 goals as a freshman as BC won the national championship, capped off by an iconic Gaudreau goal in the championship game against Ferris State. In 2014, he had 36-44—80 in 40 games and won the Hobey Baker Award, getting to play that season with Matthew, who was a freshman.
Gaudreau went on to play 763 NHL games, scoring 243 goals and 500 assists for Calgary and Columbus.
Matthew Gaudreau played four seasons with the Eagles (2014-18), scoring 16-47—63 in 119 games. They were both back home in their native New Jersey, where their sister was set to be married this weekend.
“Johnny played the game with great joy, which was felt by everyone that saw him on the ice,” the Columbus Blue Jackets said in a statement. “He brought a genuine love for hockey with him everywhere he played, from Boston College to the Calgary Flames to Team USA to the Blue Jackets. He thrilled fans in a way only Johnny Hockey could.”
Johnny Gaudreau played for Team USA, as well, in numerous international competitions, including this year’s World Championship. He won a gold medal at the 2013 World Junior Championships.
“Our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau, whose lives ended way too soon. Words cannot appropriately express the sorrow the hockey community is feeling today,” USA Hockey said in a statement.
The incident happened at approximately 8:30 p.m. Thursday night on Pennsville Auburn Road in Oldmans Township, N.J. A man driving an SUV passed a car on the left. After re-entering his lane, a car in front moved into the median to avoid the two cyclists, so the SUV driver tried to pass on the right, and struck the Gaudreau brothers, according to police.
