A preseason No. 1 ranked team in the coaches poll last lost its first game of the season 34 years ago.
Georgia football, top-ranked in the US LBM Coaches Poll, is a 13 ½ point favorite Saturday against No. 14 Clemson.
The Tigers will try to do what BYU did to No. 1 Miami in 1990 when it took down the Hurricanes, 28-21.
Carson Beck is back for his second year as Bulldogs starting quarterback after the Bulldogs went 13-1 last season, but were left out of the playoff after an SEC championship game loss to Alabama.
“I’m very anxious to get out on the field, very excited,” Beck said. “I have a lot of energy heading into week one considering we haven’t played in so long.”
Georgia lost first-round draft picks in tight end Brock Bowers and offensive tackle Amarius Mims as well as top wide receiver Ladd McConkey, but the Bulldogs will count on newcomers including Miami wide receiver transfer Colbie Young and Stanford tight end Benjamin Yurosek.
“They have a few new faces, but they all look the same,” Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said. “They all can run, they’re all strong, they’re all physical. Not a lot of room for error with these guys.”
