A Sunshine State battle kicks off Week 1, with Florida and Miami going head-to-head in Gainesville on Saturday afternoon.
The Hurricanes head into “The Swamp” with high expectations: Miami is ranked No. 19 in the Preseason AP Poll, buoyed by quarterback Cam Ward.
Ward, a Washington State transfer, has a legitimate case as the best quarterback in the ACC. Last season, he threw for 3,735 yards and 25 touchdowns, pacing a strong Wazzu offense.
Perhaps Ward is the boost that Mario Cristobal’s program needs. The Hurricanes are a mere 12-13 in the first two years of Cristobal’s tenure, and they have yet to win a bowl game in that stretch.
Cristobal’s counterpart at Florida — Billy Napier — finds himself in an eerily similar situation. The Gators are just 11-14 under Napier, and did not make a bowl game last season. A rigorous schedule —Florida is set to face a whopping eight teams ranked in the Preseason AP Poll — will not make a turnaround easy.
Much of the onus falls on redshirt senior quarterback Graham Mertz, who flashed promise last season, throwing for 20 touchdowns and just three interceptions.
The two teams last played in 2019, with Florida defeating Miami, 24-20, in Orlando. It marks the only meeting between the two rivals in the last 10 seasons.
