Who stood out for the Arizona Cardinals with (most) starters sitting in preseason opener?

The Arizona Cardinals hosted one of Arizona’s most famous residents at practice on Wednesday, as “Suga” Sean O’Malley stopped by.

O’Malley is a UFC bantamweight champion. He has an 18-1-0 professional record, after he defended his UFC bantamweight title in March against Marlon Vera. The win avenged the only loss of his career, a defeat to Vera in 2020 at UFC 252.

His next bout will be against Merab Dvalishvili at UFC 306 on Sept. 14, 2024 in Las Vegas. In preparation, he almost sparred with star Cardinals safety Budda Baker.

Fighting out of Scottsdale, O’Malley has won his last six fights in the cage. He even took his talents to the football field, lining up against Cardinals outside linebacker Dennis Gardeck and running a slant route with quarterback Kyler Murray under center.

He donned a home Cardinals No. 7 O’Malley jersey on the gridiron, a jersey Murray gifted him at practice. O’Malley gave him a UFC title belt in return, signed by Suga Sean himself.

O’Malley took pictures with many players, and even got some work in on the sled (with Cardinals 332-pound guard Will Hernandez on top of the sled). Hernandez took a turn too with the 135-pound fighter atop the sled:

O’Malley looks to defend his belt again in his next fight. Dvalishvili, 17-4-0, has won his last 10 bouts. Dvalishvili too has two title fight wins, with them coming in 2017.

After their fight on Sept. 14, O’Malley can return home to watch his Cardinals play the Los Angeles Rams at State Farm Stadium the next day. After all, O’Malley has not only lived in Arizona for the past 10 years, but even lives 20 minutes from State Farm Stadium.
