The BYOB Trolley Pub teams up with John’s Grocery for football season

A popular pedaling experience is coming to Iowa City just in time for football season.

Starting with the Hawkeyes’ season opener against the Illinois State Red Birds, Trolley Pub will offer a new game-day experience through a partnership with local institution John’s Grocery.

Drink trolleys have exploded in popularity in recent years across cities, commonly for events like bachelorette parties. Trolley Pub is a franchised business located in 20 cities across the country, offering a unique BYOB experience. In April, Sam Volkmer and Will Rice started the franchise in the Quad Cities, cutting ties with a previous company, Pedal Pub, due to licensing issues and have since hit the ground running.

The rides will arrive in Iowa City on Saturday and are expected to continue on the weekends throughout the year.

“It’s an event for people trying to get out, do something different, have fun with their friends, and see other parts of the city,” said Volkmer.

Trolley Pub’s eco-friendly vehicles are pedal-powered with electric assistance, fully licensed, and insured for road travel. Each trolley can accommodate up to 14 passengers and comes with an experienced chauffeur who guides the group along a designated route through the downtown area. Riders can stop as often or as little as they like at popular spots like The Deadwood Tavern or Big Grove Brewery. Additionally, the trolley offers accessible seating for those who prefer not to pedal. Riders under 21 can partake in the experience but must be accompanied by a guardian.

“The unique thing about our businesses is that we give back to other businesses. We bring business to other business,” Volkmer said.

The route begins and ends at John’s Grocery, an independently owned grocery store on the northside that happens to have the largest beer and spirits selection in Iowa. It is the ideal destination to pick up drinks for the ride.

“It is an experience, and I’m really glad that we can kind of bring this fun experience to Iowa City,” said Doug Alberhasky, owner of John’s Grocery. “There’s so much to see in Iowa City, and you can see it in a whole new light with all your friends.”

Both John’s Grocery and Trolley Pub are also exploring other excursions, like a historical tour of Iowa City or holiday rides through light displays during the winter season.

The Trolley Pub will be in Iowa City every Saturday of football season for a discounted price during the company’s foray into the market. The price per person is about $28, or $400 for a group of 14. Additionally, the Trolley Pub is offering 15% off the first ride in Iowa City when customers use the coupon code “HAWKEYE15” when booking online.
