Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz discusses a variety of topics ahead of the Hawkeyes’ 2024 season-opener vs. Illinois State.
The 2024 Iowa football season gets underway Saturday inside Kinnick Stadium, where the Hawkeyes will host Illinois State at 11 a.m.
Although a seemingly innocent FCS matchup on the surface, Saturday brings plenty of intrigue regarding the Iowa coaching staff. Assistant Seth Wallace will serve as the head coach for the suspended Kirk Ferentz, who’ll miss his first game since taking over the Hawkeyes due to a recruiting violation. The season opener also marks Tim Lester’s debut as offensive coordinator.

Iowa 31, Illinois State 7: Iowa’s defense usually starts the season in midseason form. The real intrigue in this game is to see how far the offense has progressed since Kids Day at Kinnick and where the Hawkeyes stand at quarterback. Expect a run-heavy game plan from Lester in Week 1.
