Do me a favor and take out your New York driver license, learner permit or non-driver ID. If you don’t see either a star or an American flag icon, you don’t have a REAL ID or Enhanced ID, and that means you may not be able to fly next year.
Here’s the good news — you still have time to make the change, and I encourage you to do it soon.
Come May 7, 2025, the federal government’s security standards will require that you have a REAL ID, Enhanced ID or another form of federally accepted identification like a valid passport to board domestic flights and access certain federal facilities.
If your ID says, “Not for Federal Purposes,” it will not get you through Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoints or access to military bases, for example.
But there is still time to get a REAL ID from the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. And best of all there is no added cost to get one above the document renewal fee that you would pay anyway.
Federal regulations require you to visit a DMV office to get a REAL ID. But we have made it easy to prepare. We offer a REAL ID online pre-screening process so you can be confident that you have everything you need before you get to our office, or you can use our handy document checklist that helps you identify what paperwork you need to bring to the DMV.
So please don’t delay — get your REAL ID today.
