‘It wasn’t real:’ Father of the paddleboarder found in Colorado reservoir honors his memory

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – On Friday, the family of the paddleboarder who was found in Rampart Reservoir gathered together to honor his memory.

”He was a beaming light… he was just the type of young man that brought joy to a room when he stepped into it,” said Otis Forrest Sr., father of paddleboarder.

Otis Forest Sr, father of Otis Forrest Jr. said his son was an extremely happy and outgoing person and played dozens of sports including slacklining, ice hockey for Lewis Palmer High School, and disc golf for team Kwik Discs- a club here in the city.

“I’m a youth sports director by trade, so he really didn’t have much of a choice growing up. He played every sport from the time he was three years old till about 13,” said Forrest Sr.

The family of Otis Jr. told us now they are going to honor the memory of him and focus on the great memories they have shared over the years.

“I know that God has a plan for all of us. His plan with Otis and his mission has obviously been complete. He must have had him spread his joy and spread his love around to so many people. I had no idea, but since this happened, all of the people that have been coming to me and then condolences. The amount of people is amazing,” said Forrest Sr.

On Saturday, Aug. 24 a search party was sent out at Rampart Reservoir after Otis Forrest Jr. was seen falling in the water and never reemerged.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife announced when they found him, he was not wearing a life vest. His family wants to remind people who are going out on the water to take the proper safety precautions like wearing a life jacket.

A candlelight vigil is being held Friday night at Cottonwood Park to honor the memory of Otis Forrest Jr. Services will begin at 8 pm.
