MINNEAPOLIS — An intriguing interconference matchup is on tap for Thursday night in the Land of 10,000 Lakes, as the Minnesota Golden Gophers kick off their 2024 season against the North Carolina Tar Heels.

With P.J. Fleck still at the helm, you can always expect Minnesota to be a competitive group with a lot of fight in them despite the outcomes not necessarily coming out in their favor. Following a 6-7 campaign in 2023, in which Minnesota won the Quick Lane Bowl, many are wondering if this team can find the form that led to a pair of 9-4 seasons. Their passing game was atrocious last year, and though they have made strives to improve that portion of their game, there is a lot to be desired. Their running game is solid, led by Darius Taylor and Jordan Nubin, but if they cannot improve the game through the air, the Gophers will be in for another long year.
North Carolina had an okay 8-5 season last year, but their 4-4 record in ACC play proved they are not the force they once were. Also, they do not have Drake Maye, giving Mack Brown a huge hole to fill at the quarterback position. They brought in Max Johnson, formerly of Texas A&M, and had Jocolby Criswell and Conner Harrell, all of which have game experience. Yet, many think the absence of a star quarterback, along with a shaky defense, will hurt the Tar Heels this year.
UNC and Minnesota met for the first time ever last year, with the Tar Heels beating the Gophers in Chapel Hill.
