Creative chicken calls earn audience’s applause at Iowa State Fair
This year’s winner of the beloved Ladies’ Chicken Calling contest is a 96-year-old!
Whether it is by the bucket or on a sandwich, very few people can resist the comfort of fried chicken.
According to Market Research Future, the global fried chicken takeout market is projected to hit $8.25 billion by 2025, with the U.S. accounting for almost a third of the market share.
Where to find the best fried chicken in Iowa?
Recently, Yelp rounded up the best fried chicken spots in every state, ranking them based on ratings and the number of five-star reviews. According to Yelp, the best fried chicken spot in Iowa is The Chicken in the Orilla neighborhood in West Des Moines.
Since opening in 2018, the classic roadhouse joint has become best known for its Nashville hot boneless fried chicken but also offers other delicacies such as broasted chicken dinners, or more inventive dishes like the Hot Chicken Sundae, a biscuit topped with mashed potatoes and boneless fried chicken strips smothered in gravy and topped with fried onions, paired with a side of sweet corn.

For most Yelp users, the Nashville hot chicken is a must-try, with one Yelp reviewer writing, “I had the Nashville chicken strips with a side of mac and cheese. It was amazing, the best chicken I’ve ever had.”
The Chicken also boasts a menu of dishes other than chicken, with more than 10 pizza options as well as voodoo shrimp.
The Chicken is owned by Des Moines-based hospitality business Full Court Press, the group that owns High Life Lounge, Fong’s Pizza, El Bait Shop, the Royal Mile and other downtown Des Moines staples.
