James Beard Award winning chefs and restaurants to know in metro Phoenix
Winning a James Beard Award is one of the highest honors a chef or restaurant can receive. It is basically the Oscars of the food industry.

USA TODAY released winners of its 10Best Reader’s Choice Awards, and three metro Phoenix businesses won in the gluten-free categories.
10Best winners are first nominated by a panel of industry experts and then put to a vote by the general public for four weeks. Gluten-free categories include best cider, best cidery, best beer, best bakery, best pizzeria and best gluten-free dining overall.
Metro Phoenix’s winners in the gluten-free categories included a veteran-owned cidery in Mesa, a horror-themed bakery in Chandler and a family-owned pizzeria with multiple Valley locations.
Here are the 2024 gluten-free winners of USA TODAY’s 10Best Reader’s Choice Awards.
Best Cider: Mango Foxtrot at Cider Corps
One of Cider Corps’ most popular flavors is the Mango Foxtrot, a semi-dry rose hip cider with 6.8% ABV. Like all of Cider Corps’ flavors, it is labeled gluten-free.

Best Cidery: Cider Corps
Cider Corps, a veteran-owned cidery in Mesa, was named one of the 10 best cideries in the country. In addition to the Mango Foxtrot, Cider Corps also makes passionfruit, orange and guava, Sangin Sangria and a palmer with black tea, lemon and peach, all gluten-free.

Best gluten-free bakery: Spooky’s Swirls
A recurring winner in the best gluten-free bakery category, Spooky’s Swirls is a dedicated gluten-free bakery that specializes in horror-themed treats, including cupcakes, cookies, pizzas and its most popular item, cinnamon rolls. Owner Lola Forbes has also appeared on Food Network’s Halloween Baking Championship.

Best gluten-free pizzeria: Spinato’s
Spinato’s is a family-owned pizza chain with multiple locations across the Valley. It offers many gluten-free options throughout the menu, including three gluten-free pizza crusts: 10-inch gluten-free, 8-inch cauliflower and 10-inch chicken keto.
