Canadian wheelchair rugby team loses to USA in first round

The American wheelchair rugby team narrowly beat out the Canadian team with a final score of 51-48.

In the first game of the Paralympics 2024, USA faced off against the Canadians at 4:30 a.m. PT.

The Americans took the early lead ending the first period with a score of 14-12, then the second period at 25-24, third period at 37-34, then the final score at 51-48.

Two of the players on the Canadian team — Byron Green and Trevor Hirschfield — are from Vancouver Island. Green is from Comox while Hirschfield is from Parksville.

Hirschfield was substituted onto the field four minutes into the first period and played for 20 minutes of the game.

He scored three tries and made one steal.

Canada is set to play its second of three preliminary qualifying games on Friday at 8:30 a.m. PT against Germany.
