Donald Trump to hold town hall in La Crosse on Thursday: Time, location, moderator, tickets

For the first time since the Republican National Convention in July, former president Donald Trump will return to battleground Wisconsin, for a town hall event Thursday night in La Crosse.

Town halls typically give voters a chance to ask candidates questions, a different format than the high-energy rallies Trump is known for. Tthis year, Trump has held rallies in Racine, Waukesha and Green Bay, and Thursday will be his first time campaigning in competitive western Wisconsin this cycle.

Here’s what to know about where and when Trump will hold his town hall, who will moderate the event, the politics of western Wisconsin and more:

What time is Trump’s town hall?

The town hall is expected to begin at 6 p.m. CT. Doors will open at 2 p.m. CT.

Where is Trump holding a town hall?

Trump is holding the town hall at the La Crosse Center in downtown La Crosse. The venue sits along the Mississippi River, which is the border between Wisconsin and Minnesota. The center hosts conventions, concerts and other events.

Vice President Kamala Harris also used the La Crosse Center as a venue for a campaign stop in April, before President Joe Biden dropped out of the race and she became the nominee. She rallied a room of supporters around abortion access during that visit.

The La Crosse Center arena can seat up to 8,000 people, according to its website. The Trump campaign hasn’t said how many voters are expected to attend the town hall.

City officials said South Riverside Park and the southern levee area will be closed Wednesday and Thursday to accommodate the event.

Can I get tickets for Trump’s town hall?

The campaign has a link where people can sign up for first-come, first-serve tickets. Only two tickets can be registered under each cell phone number.

Who’s moderating Trump’s town hall?

Former Democratic congresswoman and 2020 presidential candidate Tulsi Gabbard will moderate the debate, the Trump campaign said. Gabbard endorsed Trump on Monday.

Gabbard served as the representative for Hawaii’s 2nd Congressional District from 2013 to 2021. She left the Democratic Party in 2022.

In an interview with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel in June, Gabbard didn’t rule out joining the Republican Party or serving in Trump’s administration if he wins the November election.

How did La Crosse vote in the last election?

La Crosse County voted blue in 2020, with about 56% of the vote going to Biden and 42% to Trump. Eau Claire County is the only other county in that part of the state that voted blue in the last election. Both are home to University of Wisconsin campuses.

Trump’s outcome was about the same as in 2016, when he received about 41% of the vote in La Crosse County. Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton took 51% of the vote there.

La Crosse is in Wisconsin’s 3rd Congressional District, one of the most competitive seats in Wisconsin. Republican U.S. Rep. Derrick Van Orden will face Democratic challenger Rebecca Cooke, who advanced from a heated primary on Aug. 13.

Where else has Trump held town halls in Wisconsin?

Neither campaign has hosted many town halls yet this election year, so Trump’s choice of Wisconsin is notable.

Wisconsin is one of a handful of states that will decide the election, and both campaigns are expected to return often ahead of November. Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Walz and Minnesota First Lady Gwen Walz will visit Milwaukee on Labor Day, a few days after Trump’s town hall.

During the 2016 campaign, Trump was part of several town halls in Wisconsin, including one hosted by MSNBC at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. CNN also hosted a town hall at Milwaukee’s Riverside Theater featuring Trump, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and former Ohio Gov. John Kasich, who were still in the race.
