State game wardens early Wednesday shot and killed an adult female black bear that was roaming the lower west side of Butte, Montana, with her two cubs.
The cubs were alive in a tree near the Mineral Museum on the Montana Tech campus, and wildlife officials were working to determine “the best course of action” regarding them, Sheriff Ed Lester said.

Lester said Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks shot the adult female bear on the Tech campus at about 2:40 a.m. Wednesday.
“The bear was killed after attempts to haze the bear and her cubs away from populated areas were unsuccessful,” Lester said in a release to media. “The bear had been darted and tranquilized at least twice prior to the time she was put down.”
The bears were first sighted on Butte’s west side early Tuesday and scurried up trees at least twice.

Earlier in the afternoon, the bears had been wandering southwest of the Montana Tech campus.
They had apparently been feeding on refuse in garbage cans in the area.
Earlier Tuesday, the bears climbed a tree near West Elementary School. Game wardens and police at the scene decided to back off to give them an avenue to escape.
The bears didn’t stay up the tree for long, climbing down and continuing to explore.
