BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WKRC) – The third-largest city in Kentucky was named “Ozempictown, USA.”
According to Bloomberg,the Ozempic capital of America isn’t in Los Angeles or New York City, but in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
The New York Post reported that around 4% of Bowling Green’s residents use a weight-loss drug, which is about 3% higher than rates found in major cities like Miami or Brooklyn. Bowling Green has a population of over 72,000 and a median household income of $45,812, according to data from the United States Census Bureau.
Bowling Green, which “has more restaurants per capita than any other in the US,” according to the city’s visitor’s bureau, also has the highest concentration of people with weight-loss drug prescriptions in the United States, according to Bloomberg, citing data from PurpleLab Inc.
PurpleLab tracks a majority of scripts covered by insurance providers. The company doesn’t take into account those who do the following, per Bloomberg:
Those who pay out of pocketThose who use copycat drugs from smaller pharmacies, medical spas or online telehealth operations
Those methods make up a growing part of the weight-loss drug economy, however, especially in Bowling Green, according to Bloomberg, which noted that it was more remarkable considering Kentucky’s Medicaid program doesn’t cover the products.
Kentucky has one of the ten highest obesity rates in the country. Bowling Green is a middle class town with several large employers that have offered insurance plans that cover the shots. According to the outlet, without insurance, weight loss shots can cost up to $1,000 a month. Even so, some locals who aren’t covered are still willing to pay the out of pocket cost, per the outlet.
According to Bloomberg, these conditions set the stage for Bowling Green to become the Ozempic Capital of the U.S.
“We’re redneck enough to be fat, but smart enough to do something about it,” retired schoolteacher and Bowling Green resident Mary Sansom told Bloomberg.
