Missing Doberman puppies could be key to solving Colorado dog breeder’s homicide, investigators say

CLEAR CREEK COUNTY, Colo. (KKTV) – The whereabouts of up to 10 missing puppies could hold the key to solving a murder.

Doberman breeder Paul Peavey was found dead Aug. 24 on his property outside Idaho Springs, the victim of foul play.

“It was obvious,” friend Bruce Boynton told 11 News sister station CBS Denver.

Boynton said he first knew something was wrong when two days had passed without hearing from Peavey. He told CBS Denver he went to his friend’s home on Aug. 21, finding it ransacked.

“Door’s open, puppies gone, the place is tossed, everything of value is missing.”

Peavey, 57, was reported missing that night, but Boynton tells CBS Denver he didn’t feel he “was taken seriously.” The Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) acknowledged to CBS Denver some “missteps” on its part followed in the early stages of the investigation. A deputy was sent to Peavey’s property on the 22nd, but it wouldn’t be until two days later that a search party put together by Boynton and other friends would find Peavey’s body, partially buried on his land.

“Maybe four minutes,” Boynton told CBS Denver of how long it took their search party to locate Peavey’s remains.

The sheriff’s office has since confirmed what Boynton feared ever since he saw the state of Peavey’s home on the 21st — the death is being investigated as a homicide.

Monday night, CCSO called on the public for help locating the stolen Doberman puppies, possibly as many as 10.

“The puppies’ whereabouts are part of the ongoing investigation. In addition, investigators have not yet determined a motive for Mr. Peavey’s death,” CCSO said.

The sheriff’s office is asking citizens to do the following:

– If you purchased a Doberman puppy in the central Colorado area within the last several days, have the dog checked for a microchip.

“The unaccounted-for Doberman puppies may have been sold through social media sites or by other means since Tuesday, Aug. 20. All of Mr. Peavey’s puppies are microchipped. Anyone who purchased a Doberman puppy in the central Colorado area within the last week is encouraged to check the puppy for a microchip and contact the Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office at 303-679-2393 or [email protected]. We would then be able to determine if the puppy was one of Mr. Peavey’s,” said the sheriff’s office.

– If you recently purchased a Doberman puppy through Peavey’s business, Elite European Dobermans, contact the Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office. The office says it’s specifically wanting to hear from people who purchased a puppy since June.

“Please contact us if you received the puppy that was purchased or if you did not receive the puppy. This will help us determine exactly how many puppies are unaccounted for,” CCSO said.

The sheriff’s office said that an ad circulating online from Colorado Springs trying to find homes for eight Dobermans had been ruled out as having any connection to the investigation.

“The Craigslist ad for Doberman puppies in the Colorado Springs area is legitimate,” the sheriff’s office said Tuesday. “The breeder for that site was cooperative with investigators and is in no way involved in this case.”

In the meantime, Boynton and other friends are grieving the loss of a person they called “better than the rest of us.” Boynton described Peavey to CBS Denver as someone who cared deeply for both the people and dogs in his life.

Anyone with information on Peavey’s death is also urged to come forward by calling the sheriff’s office at 303-679-2393, emailing [email protected], or submitting info through the sheriff’s office website.
