Former NFL star Ryan Clark speaks to Sooners before season opener

The Oklahoma Sooners got some extra guidance and motivation before they officially begin their 2024 season this week. Former Pittsburgh Steelers defensive back Ryan Clark was asked by cornerbacks coach Jay Valai and head coach Brent Venables to address the team before the year gets underway.

The former NFL Pro-Bowler and Super Bowl champion was most famous for his time in the Steel City, but also played for the New York Giants and spent two stints in Washington. He was an undrafted free agent that became an integral part of a star-studded defense for the Steelers.

Most times I don’t even feel qualified to share my story in a room full of people that are more talented than I was at their age, but when @JayValai reached out about speaking to @OU_Football I decided to accept. The former LSU Tiger intercepted 16 passes in his lengthy pro career, playing in a total of two Super Bowls. He spent eight seasons in Pittsburgh.

Clark’s biggest message to the team was to practice and play in such a way that no one could ever question if they gave everything they had. As the Sooners get ready for the 2024 season, they’ll need a team effort to make a run in the vaunted SEC.

Venables and the Sooners will open up the season on Friday night against Temple. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. in Norman.
