Immigrant families sleep outside Quincy’s Wollaston MBTA Station

Dozens of immigrant families, many with small children and infants, slept on the ground outside Wollaston T station Monday, Aug. 26, 2024.

An Ohio lawmaker wants to punish employers who hire immigrants without permanent legal status.

Rep. Thomas Patton, R-Strongsville, introduced House Bill 656 earlier this month. It states that no employer can knowingly employ a person living in the country illegally.

People would be able to submit a complaint to the Ohio attorney general who will investigate and notify the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The county sheriff and other local law enforcement agencies can assist in investigating. The county prosecutor would then take the employer to court.

The bill says the county court of common pleas can order the employer to fire all “unauthorized aliens,” put the employer on probation for three years or order the employer’s licenses to be suspended up to 10 business days.

An employer would be able to prove they did not hire someone lacking permanent legal status if the employer used the e-verify program or other status verification system.

Should the bill become law, the attorney general’s office will maintain a database with the names of employers who violate the law and the address of the business location where they employed people lacking permanent legal status.

The bill has not yet been assigned a committee.
