At least Darrell “Housh” Doucette doesn’t have to worry about Shedeur Sanders coming for a spot on the United States flag football team for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

The Colorado quarterback revealed on his podcast (16:20 mark) Tuesday that he is not interested in competing in the 2028 Games due to a fear of injury, especially after finishing a full 2027 season with the 2028 campaign ahead.

Whether NFL players will participate in the next Summer Olympics has been a major storyline thanks in part to Doucette.

The U.S. Flag National Team quarterback told the Guardian earlier this month, “I think it’s disrespectful that they just automatically assume that they’re able to just join the Olympic team because of the person that they are—they didn’t help grow this game to get to the Olympics. Give the guys who helped this game get to where it’s at their respect.”

He then doubled down during an interview with TMZ Sports and specifically mentioned Patrick Mahomes.

“At the end of the day, I feel like I’m better than Patrick Mahomes because of my IQ of the game,” he said. “I know he’s, right now, the best in the league. I know he’s more accurate. I know he has all these intangibles. But when it comes to flag football, I feel like I know more than him.”

The Kansas City Chiefs signal-caller had quite the response:

A number of notable names have expressed interest in participating, including Mahomes, Joe Burrow, Jalen Hurts, Tyreek Hill and Caleb Williams. Sanders figures to be in the NFL alongside them by 2028 and may change his mind by then, but he currently isn’t interested.

For now, he is tasked with helping turn things around for the Buffaloes after a disappointing season.

The program, which went 4-8 overall and 1-8 in the Pac-12 last season, will compete in the Big 12 in 2024 following an offseason of conference realignment. It will remain under a spotlight with Sanders under center and his father, NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, as the head coach throughout the campaign.

The first game under that spotlight is Thursday against North Dakota State.
