Dozens of bars in Louisville have more than 50 different bourbons on their shelves.

Make no mistake, “Bourbon City” certainly lives up to its name, and it’s not difficult to find a fine pour bourbon in this town. But sometimes choosing a single bar or restaurant for a nightcap can feel a bit like making a choice from a well-curated bourbon list.

There are so many good options, so where do you even begin?

Whether you’re hosting out-of-town guests, traveling the Kentucky Bourbon Trail or just looking to try a new pour that you’ve never sampled before, Louisville’s bar and restaurant scene has many great options.

Here are six great bourbon bars to try in the Louisville area.

Hell or High Water

112 W. Washington St., Louisville, hellorhighwaterbar.com

This Downtown Louisville speakeasy doesn’t look like much from its inconspicuous storefront. But once you step inside what appears to be a gallery, and then through the secret doorway, you enter a roaring 1920’s-style bar. In addition to an extensive bourbon list, Hell or High Water is also known for its cocktails. Reservations are strongly encouraged.

Neat Bourbon Bar and Bottle Shop

1139 Bardstown Road, Louisville, neatbottlebar.com

Since Neat opened in 2019, it has earned the praise of Louisvillians and tourists. If you’re itching to try or buy a bottle of bourbon from the year you were born, this is your spot. Neat has a strong collection of vintage bourbons on its menu and on its retail shelves. It’s also got a robust collection of barrel picks and a celebrated cocktail menu. Neat was also named one of USA TODAY’s Bars of the Year 2024.

North of Bourbon

935 Goss Ave. Louisville, northofbourbon.com

North of Bourbon blends the Bourbon City’s culture with culinary inspiration from Bourbon Street in New Orleans. The cozy, intimate restaurant has a unique ambiance complete with tables that are inside oversized barrels. North of Bourbon serves lunch and dinner, as well as brunch on the weekends. Reservations are strongly encouraged. This gem in Louisville’s Germantown neighborhood was named the winner of The Courier Journal’s 2023 Bourbon Bar Showdown.

This pool hall in Louisville’s Original Highlands neighborhood has one of the best whiskey menus in the city for its price point. Outlook Inn is known for its rotating Whiskey Wednesday deals that highlight its strong and diverse collection of Kentucky’s favorite spirit. This is very much a no-frills neighborhood bar that has a strong following, great atmosphere and knowledgeable bar staff.

Taj Louisville

807 E. Market St., Louisville, instagram.com/tajlouisville

Taj in Louisville’s bustling NuLu retail and restaurant district has a kickback-and-relax ambiance during the day that transforms into one of the city’s favorite spots for nightlife in the evening. The bar itself is cozy, but there’s also a large back patio where it’s easy for groups to spread out. In addition to having a great bourbon list, Taj also has a knack for hosting events. Check its Instagram page for the latest on drink specials and barrel picks as well as more obscure celebrations, such as a crawfish boil and its annual goat party with live baby goats.

Watch Hill Proper

11201 River Beauty Loop, Prospect, watchhillproper.com

Watch Hill Proper in the Norton Commons area takes being a bourbon fan to the next level. You don’t have to have a membership to drink and dine at this bourbon club, but being a member does give you access to perks such as discounts and events. In addition to an expertly curated list of bourbon, the club also offers experiences where guests can drink from the barrel or even select a barrel of their own.
