It appears Connor Stalions had a big hand in Michigan’s 2022 win over the Iowa football team.

The former Wolverines staffer, who has been at the center of Michigan’s sign-stealing scandal, was awarded the game ball for “deciphering signals” in the Wolverines’ 27-14 win at Iowa on Oct. 1, 2022. Stalions is the subject of the Netflix documentary “Sign Stealer,” which was released Tuesday.

“I actually got the game ball for the Iowa game in ’22 for deciphering signals,” Stalions said during the documentary. “I’m the only one that has (a game ball) that says my name. Understanding coach (Jim) Harbaugh and his way of coaching, I think that, if anything, it’s like a ‘Hey, we see you. You’re doing a good job.'”

At the time, Michigan had not won in Kinnick Stadium since 2005. The No. 4 Wolverines built a methodical 20-0 lead through three quarters before Iowa scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to make the score look better. Iowa finished with 281 total yards that day while averaging just 1.5 yards per rush.

It’s clear Stalions had more responsibility coming after cracking the Hawkeyes.

“Well, the funny thing is,” Stalions said, “after I got the game ball, (Harbaugh) said, ‘Don’t get the big head, Connor. Don’t get a big head.'”

The Michigan football program received a Notice of Allegations from the NCAA on Sunday, pertaining to an alleged sign-stealing scandal that came to light last fall, months before the team won the national championship. Seven Michigan staffers from the 2023 team, including first-year coach Sherrone Moore, are implicated for allegedly violating NCAA rules.

The Wolverines have 90 days to respond in writing to the Notice of Allegations, followed by the NCAA then having 60 days to respond to that. The NCAA would then determine whether a hearing in front of the Committee on Infractions is necessary.

Stalions was accused of buying tickets to games against Michigan’s conference – and possible future College Football Playoff – opponents with the sole purpose of sign stealing and scouting so the Wolverines could have an advantage in games.

Stalions eventually resigned and Harbaugh was suspended by the Big Ten for the final three regular-season games in the aftermath of the investigation.
