Five things to take away from Sooners’ initial depth chart

Five things to take away from Sooners’ initial depth chart

Bryan Terry, The Oklahoman

Four out of the five offensive line spots appear to be set. It’s been the most-discussed position group on the team this offseason, but the unit has been rebuilt into what it is today.

Redshirt senior Michael Tarquin will start at tackle on the left side, pushing junior Jacob Sexton inside to left guard. It’s a good place for Oklahoma to be, at it unlocks some other combinations if injuries occur on that side.

Sexton will line up next to redshirt senior Branson Hickman, who will start at center. Hickman was a big get for offensive line coach Bill Bedenbaugh in the spring portal window. He’ll be relied upon to anchor the line this year.

Right guard will see redshirt junior Febechi Nwaiwu get the starting nod, the third of four transfers set to start up front. The right tackle spot is still up for grabs, as redshirt sophomore Jake Taylor and redshirt senior Spencer Brown (another transfer) will be battling to be one of the bookends on the reloaded unit.

The offensive line will be supremely important to the success or failure of the Sooners in 2024, and Venables and Bedenabugh seem to have 80% of the group set.
