Maine’s Cooper Flagg, set to start his freshman year at Duke as the No. 1 men’s basketball recruit in the country this fall, is signing a major endorsement deal with New Balance.
According to ESPN, the Newport, Maine, native inked a “significant shoe endorsement deal” with the Boston-based sports footwear and apparel company, which also has a factory in Flagg’s home state.
“The connection with New Balance as a family company and a company with Maine roots means a lot to me,” Flagg told ESPN. “That makes this really different and special. My mom used to go to the tent sale for back-to-school shopping there when we were kids. That really aligns the brand with my roots. It’s a perfect fit.”
The consensus top recruit in the class of 2024, which he reclassified into to enroll at Duke as a 17-year-old this fall, Flagg has looked like a future NBA star since his freshman year at Nokomis Regional High, where he led the Warriors to a Class A state championship and was named Maine’s Gatorade Player of the Year.
Flagg transferred to Montverde Academy in Florida and blossomed into the country’s most sought-after recruit. He spent the summer as the only collegiate player named to the USA Select Team, where he turned plenty of heads going toe-to-toe with the eventual gold medalists from Team USA.
Now, Flagg has his first major endorsement deal, joining stars like Kawhi Leonard and Jamal Murray as New Balance’s basketball frontmen.
“As a younger kid, I can think back to dreaming about things like this,” Flagg told ESPN. “It’s an incredible opportunity, and I’m really blessed and grateful to be put in this position.”
