5 found dead at Syosset home, police say

A 59-year-old man is suspected of killing his siblings and niece in their childhood home before turning the gun on himself on the front lawn in an apparent murder-suicide over the weekend at a Long Island residence, according to police.

On Sunday at 11:58 a.m., police arrived at a house in Syosset, New York, after they received reports of shots fired, according to the Nassau County Police Department. They discovered a man outside the home with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest.

Police later found four victims with multiple gunshot wounds in the back of the house.

“(In) 41 years, that is probably one of the most horrific scenes I’ve ever seen,” said Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder at a Monday press conference recorded and shared by Fox 5 New York.

5 dead: Suspect, victims identified

The 59-year-old man was identified Monday as Joseph Delucia, according to the press briefing.

The victims were the suspect’s siblings and niece, according to Nassau County Police Department Homicide Squad Detective Captain Stephen Fitzpatrick. They were identified as:

Joann Kearns, 69, sister, who lived in Tampa, FloridaFrank Delucia, 64, brother, who lived in Durham, North CarolinaTina Hamnond, 64, sister, who lived in East Patchogue, New YorkVictoria Hamnond, 30, Hamnond’s daughter and the suspect’s niece, who also lived in East Patchogue.

Shock and heartbreak

Neighbors were shocked by the events that unfolded at the home, according to reports from News 4 and Fox 5 New York.

“This is really heartbreaking. This is such a quiet little neighborhood they used to call it a bedroom community. It’s shocking,” a neighbor told Fox 5.

Original home owner died a week before

The original homeowner was Theresa Martha DeLucia, who died on August 19, reported News 4. She lived in the home with her two adult sons, Wendy Paisner, a neighbor who lives across the street from the house, told the outlet.

The family had gotten together the night of the shooting to discuss possibly selling the home, according to Fox 5 New York.
