U.S. Sen. Alex Padilla, D-Calif., took the stage at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on Thursday, appealing to Hispanic or Latino voters and immigrants in his endorsement of the Harris-Walz ticket.
Padilla spoke of his history working with Vice President Kamala Harris and “The American Dream”. He endorsed Harris for her ability to create a promising country for younger generations based on her work as the previous attorney general and U.S. senator in California.
The Democratic National Committee convention is in Chicago through Thursday and on Thursday, Vice President Kamala Harris is scheduled to formally accept the party’s nomination for the 2024 presidential election on Nov. 5.
What to know about Sen. Alex Padilla
Who is he? Padilla has previously stated that he is proud to be the son of immigrants, and he believes in giving everyone a fair shot at the American dream. In 2014, Padilla was elected California Secretary of State, and in January of 2021 Padilla was appointed to fill the vacancy created by the election of Vice President Kamala Harris and has served as a California Senator ever since.
What role he plays: As Senator, Padilla chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Immigration, Citizenship, and Border Safety to lead the consideration of immigration reform proposals, as well as oversight of federal agencies with citizenship, asylum, refugee, and immigration enforcement responsibilities in order to craft immigration policies. Additional focuses for Padilla include overseeing a fair due process of law in the justice system, infrastructure legislation, environment and public works, supporting renewable energy, and the American right to a fair election.

When and where is the DNC
The Democratic National Convention will take place from August 19-22 in Chicago, Illinois.
The United Center, home of the Chicago Bulls and Blackhawks, will be the main venue for the DNC.
Chicago has hosted the Democratic Convention 11 times, most recently in 1996 when the United Center saw President Bill Clinton was nominated for a second time.

How to watch and stream the 2024 DNC
The convention will air live on its website, from the United Center in Chicago between 6:15 p.m. and 11 p.m. Eastern (5:15 p.m. to 10 p.m Central) on Monday, and 7 p.m to 11 p.m. Eastern (6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Central) the other days.
USA TODAY will provide livestream coverage on YouTube each night of the DNC, Monday through Thursday.

The DNC announced nightly themes for the convention. The title of the convention is “For the People, For Our Future.”
