MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – Jonathan S. Ross, who had been serving as the United States Attorney for the Middle District of Alabama since his appointment in April, resigned over the weekend. The U.S. Department of Justice announced the departure on Monday, two days after it became effective.
A statement released by the DOJ confirmed Ross’ resignation comes in advance of his September plans to go into private practice in the Birmingham area.
Ross had been with the office since 2014. He previously serving as an Assistant United States Attorney, First Assistant U.S. Attorney and Acting U.S. Attorney before his April appointment.
During his tenure as an AUSA, Mr. Ross prosecuted a variety of cases, focusing primarily on white collar offenses and illegal opioid distribution cases, the DOJ said. From 2019 through 2022, he was as the office’s Senior Litigation Counsel, responsible for facilitating training for both new and experienced attorneys. As United States Attorney, Mr. Ross prioritized the prosecution of violent offenders, including those who possessed machine gun conversion devices, and narcotics dealers.
“It has been an honor to serve the people of the Middle District of Alabama over the past ten years,” Ross said. “I am thankful to all the federal, state, and local law enforcement partners for their support during my time with the Justice Department. These agencies, in addition to the professional and talented staff at the U.S. Attorney’s Office, are responsible for any achievements I had as a federal prosecutor and United States Attorney.”
The Justice Department named Birmingham native, First Assistant Kevin P. Davidson to serve as Acting United States Attorney for the Middle District. Davidson has been with the U.S. Attorney’s Office since 2012, prosecuting a variety of crimes with a focus on violent and drug crimes, the DOJ said.
Before joining the office, Davidson served as a Deputy District Attorney in Montgomery County for eight years. He’s a graduate of Auburn University Montgomery and earned his law degree from the University of Alabama School of Law.
The Middle District of Alabama covers 23 counties, and includes the cities of Alexander City, Andalusia, Auburn, Clanton, Dothan, Enterprise, Eufaula, Greenville, Montgomery, Opelika, Ozark, Phenix City, Prattville, Troy, and Wetumpka. The United States Attorney’s Office is responsible for conducting all criminal and civil litigation in the district involving the United States government.
