Kamala Harris Leads Trump in North Carolina in 3 Different Polling Averages

Harris/Trump

Vice President Kamla Harris narrowly leads former President Donald Trump in the swing state of North Carolina, according to three different polling averages.

After President Joe Biden exited the presidential race on July 21 and Harris subsequently became the Democratic presidential nominee, the vice president has gained momentum against Trump, the GOP presidential nominee, not only nationally, but in critical swing states like North Carolina. However, it is still anyone’s race.

Harris is currently up by 1.1 points in North Carolina, according to The Hill’s polling average (48 to 46.9 percent).

The vice president’s lead decreases, however, in the Silver Bulletin Presidential Model, which has her polling average in North Carolina at 46.8 percent and Trump’s at 46.5 percent.

Meanwhile, poll aggregator FiveThirtyEight has Harris with a polling average of 45.8 percent and Trump with 45.6 percent in the Tar Heel State.

Steven Cheung, Trump’s communications director, told Newsweek via email on Sunday morning, “President Trump dominates Comrade Kamala with the odds of him winning North Carolina at 63% to 37%.”

He also linked to an X, formerly Twitter, post from Wednesday showing a Polymarket election forecast with Trump winning North Carolina. Meanwhile, on Sunday, Trump’s lead shrank in the Tar Heel State (58 to 42 percent), according to Polymarket.

Newsweek also reached out to the Harris campaign, which declined to comment on Sunday morning.

While North Carolina is considered a battleground state, a Democratic presidential nominee has not won the state since 2008. Former President Barack Obama won the Tar Heel State during his first presidential run that year against the late Republican Senator John McCain. He then lost it in 2012 against Republican Mitt Romney, a former Massachusetts governor who is currently serving his last term in the Senate.

Trump won North Carolina in 2016 against his Democratic opponent, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and in 2020 against Biden. Although Trump did win the state twice, it was by slim margins (3.6 points and 1.3 points, respectively). If Harris was able to flip North Carolina, it would be a significant pickup opportunity for her in this year’s election.

How Is Harris Doing in Other Swing States?

Harris currently leads Trump in Pennsylvania (48.4 to 47.5 percent), Michigan (48.3 to 46.4 percent) and Wisconsin (49.5 to 46.2 percent), according to The Hill. Meanwhile, Trump is ahead of Harris in Arizona (47.3 to 47.2 percent), Nevada (47.3 to 46.3 percent) and Georgia (49.2 to 46.5 percent).

The Silver Bulletin has Harris ahead of Trump in Pennsylvania (47.7 to 46 percent), Michigan (48 to 44.6 percent), Wisconsin (48.9 to 45.5 percent), Arizona (46.6 to 45.1 percent) and Nevada (46.2 to 45 percent) while Trump leads Harris in Georgia (47.5 to 46.8 percent).

The vice president also beats Trump in Pennsylvania in FiveThirtyEight’s polling average (46.6 to 44.9 percent) as well as Michigan (46.8 to 43.5 percent), Wisconsin (47.9 to 44.2 percent), Arizona (45.7 to 44.4 percent) and Nevada (45.1 to 44.4 percent). The former president, meanwhile, leads in Georgia (46.6 to 46 percent).

How Is Harris Doing Nationally?

Harris leads Trump on the national stage in the three polling averages mentioned above.

The Hill has Harris ahead of Trump by 3.6 points (49.5 to 45.9 percent). She also leads in the Silver Bulletin’s national polling average by 4 points (48.8 to 44.8 percent). Meanwhile, FiveThirtyEight has Harris up by 3.5 points (47.2 to 43.7 percent).

However, it is unclear how former independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. dropping out of the race and endorsing Trump on Friday could change the polls.

Kennedy Jr. said on Friday that he left the race so as to not be a “spoiler” candidate, a candidate who won’t win an election but could affect the other candidates’ votes.

“Our polling consistently showed that by staying on the ballot in battleground states, I would most likely hand the election to the Democrats, with whom I disagree on most existential issues,” he said.
