Land-based casinos have been legal and thriving in Atlantic City since the 1970s. What’s more, the Garden State took the initiative regarding online gambling, first proposing legislation in 2010, as we explain below:

Aug. 22, 2024: The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement fines Borgata Casino $75,000 for underpaying taxes — the second time this has happened in the past 18 months.

Aug. 16, 2024: iGaming revenue in New Jersey jumped 25.9% year-over-year to $195.4 million in July 2024, while total gaming revenue (including in-person casinos) is 11.5% greater than the corresponding time in 2023.

July 17, 2024: New Jersey online casino revenue grew by 25.2% year-on-year in June, with $192.1 million produced compared to $186.8 million during the same time last year.

July 4, 2024: Red Rake Gaming expands offerings to New Jersey. The Garden State joins Pennsylvania and Michigan as third U.S. state where Red Rake operates. 

June 19, 2024: 888casino and 888poker exit the New Jersey market following the sale of Evoke’s (formerly 888 Holdings) U.S. operations to Hard Rock Digital.

June 18, 2024: New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy signs Executive Order No. 360 to create a Responsible Gaming Task Force in the Garden State.

May 22, 2024: Online casino revenue grew 18.2% year-over-year to $187.9 million in April, though that was down from the $197.2 million earned in March. Still, year-to-date iGaming profits were $750.7 million, up 21.1% from the same time frame the year before.

May 8, 2024: A panel of gaming stakeholders at the SBC Conference argue that online casino gaming does not harm existing brick-and-mortar casino revenues.

Apr. 18, 2024: Online casino gaming generated $197.2 million in revenue in March, 19% higher year-over-year; iGaming has brought in $562.8 million year-to-date, up 22% from last year.

Mar. 1, 2024: New Jersey Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin announces the retirement of David Roebuck, the director of the Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) and a defining influence on the legalisation of sports betting and iGaming in The Garden State. DGE’s deputy director Mary Jo Flaherty will take over as interim director.

Feb. 20, 2024: The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (NJDGE) confirms it will not take action against Evolution, dismissing a misconduct case against the software provider.

Feb. 16, 2024: New Jersey breaks four major gambling revenue records in January, according to figures released by the NJDGE.

Feb. 16, 2024: A new report, commissioned by Eilers & Krejcik Gaming (EKG), confirms iGaming boosts revenue for brick-and-mortar casinos.

Feb. 5, 2024: U.S. District Court Judge Madeline Cox Arleo rules Atlantic City’s casinos have no legal obligation to prevent compulsive gamblers from betting, dismissing a lawsuit against Borgata and parent company MGM Resorts International.

Jan. 29, 2024: The New Jersey Senate health committee approve a long-standing bill to ban smoking in Atlantic City casinos, moving the measure one step closer to a reality.

July 7, 2023: Gov. Murphy signed NJ iGaming extension legislation into law, clearing New Jersey for another five years of online casino gambling.

June 29, 2023: An initial bill reauthorizing NJ online casinos would have afforded them another 10 years, but lawmakers cut that extension to two years.

March 21, 2016: PokerStars NJ goes live and becomes the dominant poker network in the state. 

Nov. 26, 2013: Multiple online casino sites launch in NJ, including 888, FanDuel, Borgata, and Caesars, among others. 

Feb. 26, 2013: New Jersey Governor Chris Christie signs bill A2578, approving licenses for online gaming sites in the state. The licensed online casinos are told that they must partner with existing land-based casinos in Atlantic City. 

March 3, 2011: Gov. Chris Christie vetoes a bill that would’ve legalized online casino gambling. 

Nov. 2, 1976: Casino gaming was legalized in Atlantic City in an effort to regenerate the urban area.
