Why 2024 is likely to be a great fall foliage year in New Hampshire

There’s a chill in the air and a pumpkin spice latte in your hand, which means all that’s left to make it a perfect fall is New England’s foliage on full display.

When will fall foliage be at its peak this year? And will the color be spectacular, or a letdown?

A forecaster from Yankee magazine released their predictions for the foliage this autumn across New England, and it’s shaping up to be a good season in New Hampshire.

“So far, the setup suggests that New England’s fall foliage outlook is fairly bright, but fall conditions need to continue to cooperate,” the forecaster said.

Here’s the full forecast.

New Hampshire fall foliage forecast: ‘Primed for a big show’

Jim Salge, a forecaster and foliage reporter at Yankee magazine, said in his forecast that it’s looking like a good year for foliage in New Hampshire and across New England.

“The forest looks healthy, vibrant, and full of energy, and therefore primed for a big show,” Salge said in the magazine.

Foliage colors will depend on climate circumstances: the most optimal weather for strong colors is warm days and cool nights because it helps break down green chlorophyll and form red color pigments, Salge explained in the article.

This year, colors should be bright, and could be redder than normal if there is “abundant” sunshine, the forecast said.

“Colors should hang on longer than normal before fading and falling slowly,” Salge said.

Where will the best fall foliage be this year?

In the article, Salge said the best areas for fall foliage this year will be around the Berkshires in Massachusetts, central Green Mountains in Vermont, the White Mountains in New Hampshire and western Maine.

“A bonus bright spot later in the season may be eastern Massachusetts, where it’s been some years since a real ‘good show’!” Salge wrote.

When will fall foliage peak in New Hampshire, New England?

Yankee magazine’s fall foliage forecast predicts that peak colors will come out as the weather cools down.

“We expect peak color to develop on time in northern New England, compared with historical averages, with the onset of cooler weather,”Salge said.
