Severe weather chance for Tuesday: Humidity has us like a powder keg awaiting spark

As the temperatures and humidity continue to ramp up over the next couple days, how concerned should we be about the chance for severe weather?

The National Weather Service (NWS) says our chance for damaging winds and large hail on Tuesday during the day and/or Tuesday night right now are hovering between 20-40%.

Tornadoes are not expected. But some areas could see locally heavy rain and cloud-to-ground lightning if these storms do pop up.

It’s the humidity and unsettled weather pattern that has us on the edge of severe weather. The NWS team in Grand Rapids explained it this way today in a social media forecast post:

“We have a 20-40% chance of storms in our forecast for Tuesday & Tuesday night in central-southern Lower Michigan, plus a threat of severe weather,” NWS meteorologists said. “With this hot and humid air in place, think of it like sitting on a powder keg and waiting for a spark to come along. Not sure if or when. Be aware but don’t cancel plans.”

How hot and humid is it going to get early this week? Monday and Tuesday are the hot-seat days, with temps approaching 90 on Monday and topping the 90-degree mark on Tuesday. Continued humidity will make the heat index soar to around 100, the NWS said.

Temps are expected to cool down a bit by Wednesday.
