Raising Cane’s opening its Iowa City location on Aug. 27

A popular chicken joint and its famous dipping sauce has arrived in Iowa City.

Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers opens for business in downtown Iowa City on Tuesday, Aug. 27. The nationwide chicken tender franchise is expanding its reach into the Old Capitol Town Center, a short walk from the University of Iowa campus.

Raising Cane’s offers a variety of chicken finger combos for all appetites, including the “Three Finger,” “Box,” with four fingers, or “Caniac,” with six, alongside crinkle-cut fries, Texas Toast, coleslaw and a drink.

The combos also come with the franchise’s signature Cane’s Sauce.

The restaurant will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 a.m., seven days a week, a spokesperson said.

Raising Cane’s opened its first Johnson County location in Coralville in 2022 and has continued to expand its reach in the state.

Celebrating the occasion with ‘freebies’

Cane’s takes over the location previously held by Panera Bread at 201 S. Clinton St.

The first 100 customers to order the “Box Combo” next week at the downtown location will receive a commemorative Box Combo hat and a coupon for a free Box Combo, a spokesperson told the Press-Citizen.

A “Lucky 20” drawing will also reward 20 lucky customers with free Cane’s for a year, the spokesperson said. Entries will be accepted between 8-9 a.m. on Aug. 27.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony alongside the local Greater Iowa City, Inc. group and Iowa City Mayor Bruce Teague is scheduled to help celebrate the opening on Aug. 27.

Winners of the Lucky 20 drawing will be announced after the ribbon-cutting, which will also feature the presentation of a donation to the Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center. A live DJ will be in the restaurant to celebrate the opening.
