Vote! What is the best Rhode Island high school football rivalry? You decide

Each high school football rivalry has its own flavor.

Westerly-Stonington straddles state lines, but no love is lost on Thanksgiving Day. Cranston East and West is a Turkey Day showdown for city bragging rights. North and South Kingstown take to Meade Stadium for their annual performance and Hendricken-La Salle is always fireworks.

But there’s plenty of great football rivalries that are renewed each fall, and we’re only a few weeks from kick-offs across Rhode Island. It’s up to you, the fans, to tell us which you think is the best!

Vote below, email submissions will not be accepted, for the best Rhode Island high school football rivalry. Voting opened on Thursday, Aug. 22 and closes on the 29th at 11:59 p.m.

Stonington vs. Westerly

Westerly has owned this series of late, winning the last six games. The Bulldogs crossed 50 wins on Thanksgiving Day last year and lead the series 51-44 on the holiday. But it’s Stonington that lays claim to the all-time advantage. Westerly-Stonington dates back to 1911 and needs no further introduction among the best rivalries.

Cranston East vs. Cranston West

Cranston West vs. Cranston East is another long-standing Thanksgiving tradition, but further north on I-95 from South County. West vs. East provides plenty of fireworks at Cranston Stadium. Last year was the 50th annual meeting (no game in 2020) with Cranston West leading the win column 26-24. This series ebbs and flows through the years — Cranston East won seven of the first eight contests — and it’s the Falcons who have took the last five meetings.

North Kingstown vs. South Kingstown

The Skippers vs. Rebels yearly meeting isn’t nearly as long as the aforementioned matches, but next fall still marks 25 years for these neighbors. North Kingstown holds a 13-10 advantage on Thanksgiving Day and has won the last seven times. The pair also matched seven times from 1946-54 with SK winning six of those meetings.

Hendricken vs. La Salle

Hendricken vs. La Salle isn’t a Thanksgiving Day game, but the matchup usually comes late in the season. The perennial powers in the state have met in the championship 10 out of the last 13 games (met in the 2021 spring and fall championships). Hendricken won eight of those meetings against the Rams.

Coventry vs. West Warwick

There’s also no love lost between Coventry and West Warwick. Those two programs have played nearly every year since 1948 (there were no Thanksgiving Day matchups between the two from 1953-64). The Wizards have dominated this rivalry (45-14-2) after winning every year but one between 1999-2017. The Oakers have staked their claim the last few seasons with five straight victories.
