New Mexico is hoping the program can turn the corner and become a consistently competitive program in the Mountain West Conference. With former BYU and Virginia coach Bronco Mendenhall returning to the sidelines, joining the Lobos to give the team some prestige. Last year, New Mexico’s offense improved after some down years, but their defense was inevitably its weak spot, leading to a 4-8 season in 2023. If their defense improves, it will rely on a better pass rush, led by senior defensive end Devin Brandt-Epps.
While it might look like New Mexico taking on an FCS team is a throwaway game, the team they are playing is anything but that. The Bobcats have been one of the most consistent “second-tier” programs in the country over the years. Along with having made it to the FCS Playoffs in five of the last six years, including a championship game appearance in 2021. Montana State is expected to challenge for the Big Sky Conference once again. They last were co-conference champions in 2022.
MY PICK: New Mexico wins, 24-21
