It’s not even September, and high school football may already have a consensus nod for Play of the Year.
In a wild Alabama high school football game on Friday night, Ohatchee (Ala.) turned up the drama in the closing seconds of the fourth quarter against New Hope (Ala.).
Down 71-70, the Ohatchee offense gave it one last go at the end zone, which had been familiar territory up to that point. Quarterback Jake Roberson dropped back toward midfield as the seconds ticked away and unleashed a Hail Mary … in the direction of two receivers … with three New Hope defenders also in the area of the heave.
The scene was Hollywood cliche, with an ending fitting of any sports blockbuster: the pass neared the right side of the end zone, the five players bundled in intense anticipation, jockeying for the right to be the hero, then—tipped pass! Just like that, wide receiver Brayden Collins’ quick reaction with a left-handed snag ended the game in favor of Ohatchee, 76-71.
Watch the Hail Mary drama during the NFHS Network broadcast:
The game ended up being as historic as it was entertaining (if offense is your thing), with the two teams’ combined 147 points holding rank as the most in a regulation game in AHSAA history. (The quadruple-overtime game in 2023 between Central-Hayneville and Billingsley is still the all-time leader.)
