South Dakota’s Devin Cargin has overcome a lot to play in this year’s Little League World Series.

Cargin was born with a heart defect that required open-heart surgery when he was just three months old.

Cargin’s parents later discovered that he is deaf in his left ear. The multi-sport athlete uses a cochlear implant that was placed in 2020.

Cargin had seven RBIs and a home run in regional play.

“It hasn’t affected (his sports career) at all,” Cargin’s mother said during the ESPN broadcast. “We let him do whatever he wants and as long as the doctors let us do it, we’re going to keep letting him do what he wants.”

Cargin’s father said during the broadcast: “He’s just another normal 12-year-old. He’s had his things … but he does everything everybody else does. He doesn’t let anything faze him. Probably bothers me and his mom more than it does him.”
