Have you ever wondered what the most popular designers and brands are in each state?
In the South, shoppers love preppy vacation brands like Lilly Pulitzer, while in the Northeast, women often opt for workwear brands like J. Crew.
To find out the most popular designers, FEMAIL received data from Poshmark and Afterpay – and looked at analytics from Google Trends state by state – to discover where women are shopping as well as what they’re searching for and buying.
‘The state you reside in strongly dictates your exposure to brands and what is trending in your region,’ Chloe Baffert, the head of merchandising and curation at Poshmark consumers, told DailyMail.com.
Chloe explained that ‘whether consciously or not’ people ‘look to those around them for what brands to wear,’ which ‘becomes all the more apparent when visiting a new state.’

The South
‘Each state has poster child brands that represent the style of its residents – Lilly Pulitzer is synonymous with Palm Beach and southern resort wear style, and is one of the top purchased brands among Poshmark shoppers in Florida, and both North and South Carolina,’ Chloe said.
And when it comes to Washington, D.C., which is technically in the South although it does defy categorization, there’s a focus on sustainability.
‘In social and politically-centric states like the nation’s capital, we see a direct correlation between sustainably focused brands being purchased like Reformation, and brands with a meaningful mission, like Chantecaille, a luxury beauty brand with strong philanthropic ethos,’ Chloe explained.
Athleisure is also on the rise in southern states – Lululemon is the most popular brand in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Tennessee, Texas, and Maryland.
In North Carolina, female shoppers are currently perusing Tuckernuck, the preppy website that sells a variety of designers, like colorful sundresses from Alexis and classic denim from Agolde, as well as its own brand.
People in Alabama also love shopping at Gus Mayer, a local women’s clothing store, according to data from financial services firm Digg, which looked at Twitter to see what brands people in each state talked about most.
Alabama women are also shopping online at fast-fashion retailer Fashion Nova, per Google Trends.
According to data about top stores from Yelp, people in Arkansas are also big Target shoppers and in Kentucky, they adore Marshall’s.

The Northeast
If you’re spending time in the Northeast, expect to see people embracing quiet luxury.
‘Quintessential preppy style, before it was dubbed the trendy quiet luxury, and the East Coast go hand in hand,’ Chloe said.
‘J. Crew is among the top purchased brands of Poshmark shoppers in New York, Maine, Virginia, and Connecticut,’ Chloe continued.
But it’s not all about preppy style – in Connecticut and Rhode Island, boho-chic brand Free People reigns supreme on Poshmark, and in New York and Pennsylvania, shoppers are buying up Lululemon secondhand.

According to Google Trends, New Yorkers are also interested in the high-low combination – FEMAIL looked at the analytics for shopping, women’s clothing, and fashion and style.

According to data from the buy now, pay later financial technology company Afterpay, women in California are shopping for the basics, as well as dresses, skirts, sandals, and shorts for the warmer weather.
Unsurprisingly, in Nevada, wedding and bridal party dresses are another major purchase on Afterpay – just think about all of those Las Vegas weddings.
