Former Ohio State coach Urban Meyer seems to know the reputation Ohio State offensive coordinator Chip Kelly has developed during his college football career. That reputation is something Meyer is excited to see work in the OSU offense.
“I’m anxious to see it,” Meyer said in an appearance on “The Herd with Colin Cowherd” show Thursday.
Meyer said he and Kelly are “very close.” And while the two never faced off on the football field, Meyer has watched Kelly’s play-calling style change “drastically.”
“His philosophy back in the day at Oregon as a head coach and as a coordinator was, ‘Go as fast as you can,’” Meyer said. “That evolved when he went to the NFL, and it (has) really evolved when he went to UCLA. He’s now the perfect play guy. He’s a guy that’s going to huddle, take your time and get the perfect play on.”
Meyer said he believed Ohio State’s offensive scheme under Kelly will look more like his scheme at UCLA based on OSU announcing Will Howard as its starting quarterback.

And while Meyer said it’s “completely different than the so-called radical offense he ran when he was the head coach at Oregon,” he expects the Ohio State offense to work between Kelly and Howard.
“I do believe it’s going to help Ohio State that they got the quarterback, I think, that fits this scheme,” Meyer said.
