MILWAUKEE − Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance referenced a decades-old Martin Scorsese movie Friday to help describe former President Donald Trump’s plans for the mass deportations of undocumented immigrants.

Vance referred to the 2002 film “Gangs of New York” when asked at a campaign stop in Milwaukee about past remarks he made about earlier waves of Irish, Italian and German immigrants coming to the country and whether they should have faced the same threat of deportation.

“Has anybody ever seen the movie ‘Gangs of New York’?” Vance asked at a news conference at the Milwaukee Police Association. “That’s what I’m talking about.”

“We know that when we have these massive ethnic enclaves forming in our country, it can sometimes lead to higher crime rates,” Vance said. “What we want is an American immigration policy that promotes assimilation.

Research has shown migrants are no more likely to commit crimes than native-born Americans.

The fictional movie takes place in 19th century New York and features a feud between rival gangs of Irish immigrants, led by a character played by Oscar-winner Leonardo DiCaprio, and anti-immigrant, anti-Catholic “nativists,” led by a character known as Bill the Butcher, played by three-time Oscar winner Daniel Day Lewis.

Vance made the remarks as he discussed immigration and crime — among the top issues for Republicans on the campaign trail.

“I think we’re at a stage right now where we have to say we’ve got to slow those illegal immigration levels to zero,” Vance said. “We do have to deport some people who have come here illegally, and I think that will promote assimilation and a common American culture that’s in the best interest of everybody.”
