Wildfires in the western United States and Canada caused the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services and the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy to issue a smoke advisory on Friday.
The advisory will last until 3 a.m. Sunday. The advisory covers parts of northern and central Nebraska including Ainsworth, Alliance, Broken Bow, Chadron, O’Neill, Norfolk, South Sioux City and Valentine.
The two state agencies said in a press release the smoke advisory will range from orange to red. Updated information can be found online at airnow.gov.
Under the orange designation, according to the advisory, members of sensitive groups may experience health effects. Those sensitive groups include people with heart or lung disease, older adults and children. Sensitive groups are advised to reduce prolonged or heavy exertion and avoid intense outdoor activities. The agencies added everyone else can remain active and adjust activity duration and intensity as needed.

Under the red designation, the air quality will be unhealthy to members of the general public. The agencies said everyone is advised to avoid prolonged or heavy exertion and those in sensitive groups should consider moving activities indoors or rescheduling.
