Top IHSAA football players in 2024? Ranking offensive players in Iowa City area

From Mason Woods to Colin Whitters, the Press-Citizen ranked the top offensive players for the 2024 Iowa high school football season in the Iowa City area.

The 2024 IHSAA football season enters primetime on Aug. 29, and the Press-Citizen has listed the top offensive playmakers in the Iowa City area.

From Iowa commit Mason Woods to Pittsburg State commit Bobby Bacon, there’s plenty of offensive firepower across the Iowa high school football scene.

Here’s the Press-Citizen’s ranking of the area’s best offensive players, from 10 to 1:

Best Iowa high school football offensive players in the Iowa City area for 202410. Tate WallaceRegina Catholic

Vitals: 6-2, 225, Soph.

Wallace made his mark as a freshman for a Regina team that finished with a 9-2 record and made the Class 1A state quarterfinals in 2023. He hauled in 35 receptions for 430 yards and three touchdowns.

9. Eddie JohnsonSolon

Vitals: 6-1, 205, Sr.

College offers: Quincy University

Johnson was an all-purpose player for the Spartans last season. He rushed for 378 yards and six touchdowns on 71 carries, the second-most on the team. He also snatched 16 receptions for 258 yards and three touchdowns.

8. Conlan PoyntonClear Creek Amana

Vitals: 5-11, 180, Jr.

Poynton was a workhorse for Solon football in 2023. He rushed for 965 yards on 147 carries and 14 touchdowns that ranked first on a Solon team that reached the Class 3A semifinals last season. He transferred to CCA this offseason and is slated to be a quarterback for the Clippers.

7. Dallas MillerIowa City Liberty

Vitals: 5-11, 170, Sr.

College offers: Grand View University, Bemidji State University

Miller was an explosive wideout for the Lightning last season. He was a first-team all-district receiver and led Class 5A with 12 receiving touchdowns. He hauled in a team-high 60 receptions with 804 receiving yards on 13.4 yards per catch.

6. Jack WallaceIowa City West

Vitals: 6-2, 215, Sr.

College commitment: Minnesota State

Wallace, a seasoned veteran, has served as the No.1 quarterback at Iowa City West for the past four years. Last season, he threw for 1,807 yards and 13 touchdowns as a junior. He also rushed for 199 yards and six touchdowns on 70 carries.

5. Tyler RindelsIowa City High

Vitals: 6-4, 265, Sr.

College commitment: Northern Illinois

Rindels is one of four returning offensive linemen for the Little Hawks this season. Rindels, who plays tackle, is a two-star recruit by 24/7 Sports, ranked 19th in the state. Rindels has been a big piece for a City High team that’s reached the playoffs in each of the last three seasons.

4. Sutton KollerIowa City Liberty

Vitals: 5-11, 170, Sr.

College offers: Grand View University

Koller was a versatile playmaker for the Liberty offense last season. He finished with eight touchdowns and a team-high 816 receiving yards as a junior. He hauled in 59 receptions, the fourth-best in Class 5A. He rushed for 330 yards with seven touchdowns and 73 carries.

3. Bobby BaconIowa City High

Vitals: 6-2, 180, Sr.

College commitment: Pittsburg State University

Bacon emerged as the starting quarterback for the Little Hawks in 2023. He threw for 2,193 yards and 18 touchdowns as a junior. His 155.6 passer rating ranked first in Class 5A. He committed to Pittsburg State in July.

2. Colin WhittersIowa City West

Vitals: 6-4, 300, Jr.

College offers: Iowa, Iowa State

Whitters is a three-star recruit, ranked No. 7 in the state by 24/7 Sports. The interior offensive lineman will look to strengthen the protection for an Iowa City West offense that rushed for 21 touchdowns and notched 14 passing touchdowns in 2023.

1. Mason WoodsIowa City West

Vitals: 6-3, 215, Sr.

College commitment: Iowa

Woods is one of the most sought-after recruits in the Iowa City area. The senior athlete is a three-star recruit, ranked third in the state by 24/7 Sports. In June, he committed to Iowa over Kansas, Kansas State and Miami (OH), among others. Last season, he hauled in 35 receptions for 535 yards and three touchdowns.
