Rankings top 50 senior recruits in Iowa class of 2025

The Iowa high school football season is almost here, and so is the Des Moines Register’s ranking of the top 50 senior recruits in the state for the 2024 IHSAA season.

Most of the top recruits in the state are already committed, with several choosing Iowa and Iowa State. But there are still some uncommitted players left in the 2025 recruiting class, like Urbandale’s Axel Ramazani or Council Bluffs Lincoln’s Etienne Higgins.

There is a difference between the top players and the top recruits – although there is a lot of overlap – so this list focuses solely on recruiting.

Based on game film, college interest, conversations with coaches and trainers, and first-hand observations, here are the Register’s top 50 recruits – with 20 honorable mentions – in Iowa for the class of 2025.

Top Iowa high school football recruits in the 2025 class1. Thomas Meyer

Clear Lake

Commit: Iowa

The “athlete” designation seems built for Clear Lake’s 6-foot-5, 210-pound tight end. He plays both ways for the Lions, and it’s easy to see why. His vision and hands stand out from the crowd, and even double coverage isn’t enough at times.

2. Alex Manske

Algona

Commit: Iowa State

Manske’s steady climb through the ranks makes him the top quarterback in the state. The 6-3, 205-pound field general took his game to a new level this summer, competing against some of the best at Elite 11 and working on his consistency, accuracy and mechanics.

3. Jack Limbaugh

Algona

Commit: Iowa State

Limbaugh quietly made his way into the top three, but he definitely deserves to be here. Opposing players might not like lining up against the 6-4, 220-pound edge, especially when he delivers strong, clean hits and is nothing short of relentless.

4. Will Hawthorne

Gilbert

Commit: Iowa State

The 6-2, 220-pound athlete is a force on both sides of the ball. Recruited at linebacker, he is patient and efficient. But he’s strong, too, delivering hard-hitting blows. On offense, he brings those blocking skills to the field when he isn’t running the ball.

5. Zay Robinson

Valley

Commit: Iowa State

Iowa high school football fans have waited a year to see Robinson take the field, with the 6-foot, 175-pound wide receiver missing his junior season with an injury. He is fast, strong and makes difficult catches look easy.

6. Malachi Curvey

Ankeny Centennial

Commit: Kansas

Curvey returns to the Jaguars – where he started his high school career – and he adds to an already strong program. The 6-3, 220-pound athlete brings strength and speed to both sides of the ball.

7. Will Tompkins

Cedar Falls

Commit: Iowa State

Tompkins anchors one of the top offensive lines in the state, and he’s a menace. At 6-5, 270 pounds, he’s a tough matchup at offensive tackle, especially when he moves opponents several yards downfield.

8. Joey VanWetzinga

Pleasant Valley

Commit: Iowa

The 6-2, 225-pound lineman is a force on offense and defense for Pleasant Valley. There are few players who could match up with him for an entire game last season, with his strength, timing and IQ making him tough to face.

9. Mason Woods

Iowa City West

Commit: Iowa

There isn’t a part of the game Woods isn’t good at: offense, defense or special teams. The 6-2, 220-pound star is athletic as they come, and he makes an impact with impressive catches and strength on defense.

10. Ethan Stecker

Spirit Lake

Commit: Iowa State

Stecker jumped into the top 10 of these rankings thanks to some impressive performances over the last few months. The 6-4, 200-pound athlete was recruited as a safety by Iowa State, where his stellar receiver skills could come in handy for interceptions.

11. Brody Clubb

Clear Creek Amana

Commit: North Dakota State

The 6-3, 225-pound athlete plays on both sides, but he’ll be an edge in college. He creates plays for his quarterback on offense and is a wrecking ball on defense.

12. Axel Ramazani

Urbandale

Commit: Wyoming

Finds gaps or makes them, and opposing quarterbacks hate to see this 6-3, 220-pound, one-man wrecking ball coming their way.

13. Ethan Wood

Mount Vernon

Commit: North Dakota State

The 6-4, 220-pound edge pulls in tough catches on offense and never gives up on making his tackle on defense.

14. Louden Grimsley

Sioux City East

Commit: South Dakota

There’s nothing but speed when this 6-1, 175-pound wide receiver gets the ball in his hands.

15. Tariq Miller

Central Decatur

Commit: Wyoming

Hard work paid off for the 6-3, 285-pound offensive lineman, who brings grit, strength and a stealthy speed to the field.

16. Manasse Kasongo

Sioux City East

Offers: Nebraska, Northern Iowa

The 6-7, 220-pound edge holds offers for football and basketball, which makes sense for the speedy, strong and stretchy athlete.

17. Kaz Rebarcak

Davenport North

Commit: Northern Iowa

There is a lot to like about the 6-4, 200-pound quarterback, including a strong arm and his off-season growth.

18. Tyler Rindels

Iowa City High

Commit: Northern Iowa

Try to get to this 6-4, 260-pound offensive tackle’s quarterback or running back. He won’t make it easy.

19. Kailer Smith

Cedar Falls

Commit: Northern Iowa

The 6-6, 230-pound tight end is a blocking machine, which is clutch in Cedar Falls’ run-heavy offense.

20. Elijah Hoyt

Urbandale

Commit: Northern Iowa

This 6-foot, 170-pound athlete brings solid vision and speed to both sides of the ball.

21. Kaleb Diers

Marion

Commit: Northern Iowa

Marion’s do-it-all guy will be a tight end in college, but the 6-6, 210-pound star’s speed and size make him a threat in several positions.

22. Cooper Buffington

Winfield-Mt. Union

Commit: Montana

Buffington is a brick wall and a relentless tackler, and he hits hard with his 6-3, 235-pound frame.

23. Amari Washington

Bettendorf

Commit: Northern Illinois

The 6-3, 255-pound athlete is speedy, shifty and disruptive, and opponents have a tough time getting in his way.

24. Etienne Higgins

Council Bluffs Lincoln

Offer: North Dakota

Higgins stepped up his game over the summer, and college coaches took notice. There is a lot to like about his speed and catching abilities.

25. Marcus McGregor

Valley

Commit: Wyoming

Between his brute strength and solid fundamentals, plus a good amount of speed for an offensive lineman, there is a lot to like about the 6-3, 280-pound athlete’s game.
