The Iowa high school football season is here, and so is the Ames Tribune to rank the best 10 sophomores in the Ames area for the 2024 IHSAA season.
Top sophomores this season include a game-breaking running back who emerged last year as a freshman and a potential breakout slot receiver. It also features several other players ready to step up and make full-time contributions at the varsity level.

Here’s the Ames Tribune’s ranking of the area’s best sophomore players, in alphabetical order:
Seth Bell
Collins-Maxwell
Bell opens the 2024 season with a shot at a starting cornerback spot for the Collins-Maxwell football team.
As a freshman, Bell contributed to the Collins-Maxwell defense in a reserve role. He made eight tackles and one interception during the 2023 season.
Fiston Carlson
Roland-Story
Carlson could be in store for a huge year running the football for the Roland-Story football team in 2024.
As a freshman running back, Carlson burst onto the scene during the second half of the 2023 season. He ran for 310 yards and five touchdowns on just 28 carries.
With an added year of development, a talented offensive line led by all-state lineman Roland Yates and a veteran quarterback handing him the ball in Sam Knoll, Carlson could be in for a huge year carrying the football in 2024. Carlson also has the potential to be a disruptive force at linebacker on defense.

Caleb Coffelt
Collins-Maxwell
Coffelt will be a key contributor in a reserve role for the Collins-Maxwell football team during the 2024 season.
Coffelt will back up Nate Smith and Reed Oswalt at cornerback for the Spartans. In 2023 he totaled 10 tackles as a freshman.
Clayton Hertz
Ames
Ames coach Tom Crowden said Hertz could be a valuable contributor on the kickoff team for the Little Cyclones in 2024.
As a freshman Hertz tallied three tackles in a limited role.
Sam Hoffman
Ballard
Hoffman handled the kicking duties for Ballard as a freshman in 2023.
Hoffman gives Ballard a battle-tested weapon in special teams. He made 24 of 26 extra points as a freshman.
Brennan Swanson
Ames
Swanson has a chance to be a big weapon in the passing game for the Ames football team in 2024.
Crowden said Swanson will compete for time at slot receiver. Crowden said Swanson is skilled at running routes and making things happen after the catch.

Jayden Swanson
Colo-NESCO
Swanson saw a little bit of varsity action as a freshman.
In 2023, Swanson totaled three tackles and one sack on defense. He also returned a fumble 22 yards for a touchdown.
Cooper Triggs
Roland-Story
Triggs could help Roland-Story out at receiver and linebacker this season.
As a freshman, Triggs saw limited action and he ended up with one tackle on the season.
Trent Wesselmann
Gilbert
Wesselmann has a chance to help Gilbert in the trenches during his sophomore season.
Benton Winkey
Ames
Winkey saw limited time as a freshman for the Ames football team last season.
Winkey made three tackles, including two solo stops in 2023. Crowden said Winkey could contribute on the Little Cyclone kickoff team in 2024.
Gilbert coach Graham Lundt said Wesselmann could contribute on both the offensive and defensive lines for the Tigers in 2024.
