Southerners love Buc-ee’s, the Texas-based gas station chain and convenience store known for its Beaver Nuggets and large, clean restrooms.
Travelers also enjoy its friendly beaver mascot that wears a red cap and shirt advertising the store’s logo (which is a cartoon of itself).
No on one would have expected the beaver to do what it did in May 2022.
According to a USA TODAY story, a lawsuit was filed in South Carolina by a man who allegedly tripped and fell while visiting a Buc-ee’s in Florence County. The incident was partly caused by a large inflatable Buc-ee’s beaver.

What happened during the incident at Buc-ee’s?
The lawsuit, filed in Florence County on Aug.1, states Richard E. Brown of Kershaw County was walking down the sidewalk outside of the Florence location when he tripped over a rope running from the base of the inflatable mascot to the anchor point across the street. The suit alleges the store location was aware of the rope’s “dangerous” condition and failed to repair the hazard amounting to careless, reckless, wanton, and/or willful negligence, per the USA TODAY story.
What injuries did Brown sustain?
In court documents, Brown said the fall caused several injuries, especially to his right shoulder. Due to the injuries, he has incurred medical costs and has experienced “physical pain, suffering, mental anguish emotional distress, and impairment of health and bodily efficiency.” Brown also alleges he suffered “great physical pain to the body and limbs” due to Buc-ee’s failure to properly maintain the sidewalk.
How much is Brown seeking in financial damages?
It is unknown how much Brown is seeking in financial damages. Buc-ee’s did not immediately respond to USA TODAY’s request for comment.
