Abraham Lincoln continues tradition with the Illinois State Police

SPRINGFIELD, ILL (WICS) — Earlier this morning, the Illinois State Police joined Honest Abe at the Illinois State Fair to continue their annual tradition.

For the ninth year in a row, Illinois State Troopers hit the big yellow slide with Abraham Lincoln. This tradition was started to give the community a chance to see first responders outside of their work environment.

Police State Trooper, Jason Wilson said the Illinois State Fair is one of the best ways to connect with the public.

“We are public servants. that’s something that sometimes gets lost in translation,” Wilson said. “Our job as public servants is that we’re out there to serve the public. So, we want to make sure that we’re out there so we can interact with the public so they can understand that we are there for them.”

Abraham Lincoln said this tradition allows the public to see first responders in a positive light.

“It’s important to see a softer, more gentle side of these people that you don’t always see,” Lincoln said. “You know that they are in charge and authorized with keeping us all safe, but to see these people enjoying the fair, it just helps us to understand that they’re regular folks like us.”
